POMPEY

Command, Glory, and Civil War

106–48 BC Deep dive · ~90–160 minutes Coming to YouTube

September 28th, 48 BC. A small boat works toward an Egyptian beach near Pelusium. On board is a Roman who, not long ago, could look at the Mediterranean and treat it like his own backyard.

He is fifty-seven. Three times consul. The man who cleaned the pirates off the sea in about a hundred days, who redrew half the East, who picked up the nickname Magnus — the Great — while he was still young. He steps onto the sand expecting help. A foreign court has already done the math. Pompey alive is a problem. Pompey dead is a gift for Julius Caesar.

Cicero is the voice. Caesar is the man who finally breaks the old game open. Pompey is the superstar — the one the system invents when it needs victories faster than the old rules allow, then resents once those victories make him too big for the rules. Not a pure oligarch. Not a pure popularis. A military brand inside a constitution that pretends brands do not run the state.

The film follows the teenage commander under Sulla, Spain and Sertorius, the pirate war, the eastern settlement, the First Triumvirate, the theater that still bears his name, civil war, Pharsalus, and the beach. He dies not in a Roman battle line, but by treachery, almost casually — as if the story got tired of him before he was finished telling it.
